The Least Expected and the Most Unlikely
Who would have thought…A childless bedouin from the land of Ur? His name was Abram. From what we know of him, he didn’t come from royalty or from a place of position. He was a lowly man whose name meant ‘exalted father’ but yet he and his wife remained childless. Nevertheless, God called Abram (later Abraham – father of many) to to become the father of a great nation, to give him a great name, to be a great blessing to everyone upon the earth (Genesis 12).
God’s call is a wonderful thing. He uses the least expected and the most unlikely to do his work (1 Corinthians 1:26-27, Matthew 20:16). Consider Moses who struggled with his speech yet became the communicator of God’s law. Consider David, a little shepherd boy, who defeated the Hulk Hogan of Philistia. Consider Rahab…a prostitute who aided and embedded in the defeat of Jericho and who stands in the lineage of Jesus Christ. Consider Paul, the persecutor of Christians who became the the great evangelist and teacher and even described himself as the least of all saints (Ephesians 3:8). And most of all consider Jesus Christ…the suffering servant who died for the sins of the world. God chooses the least expected and the most unlikely to do great things for Him. Do you realize the God has called you too to do something great for him?
God’s call is a wonderful thing. He calls all of us for a specific purpose. Proverbs 16:4 states that the Lord has made everything for its own purpose–even the wicked for the day of evil. You and I have a specific purpose. I am not talking about the Great Commission, for that is a given for all of us in Christ as we go about the Christian life. I am talking about a specific purpose for you and for me. So what is your purpose? Why did God create you? What is your role in redemptive history?
Don’t worry about the end game. Abram never knew the destination…he only knew the direction. What direction has God called you? Perhaps your answers to the following questions will help you discern God’s specific call on your life:
1. What are your spiritual gifts? God has given you spiritual gifts for a specific purpose.
2. Look at your relationships with others. Every relationship you have with another person falls under the providential plan of God.
3. Look at the needs of those around you.
4. In all of this, where do you see God moving? If God has equipped you with spiritual gifts..the tools for building his Kingdom and those around you are in need, then look at where God is moving and jump in and get to work.
God has called every one of us…the least expected and the most unlikely to do great things for Him. Take a moment this week to write down God’s specific call upon your life and make sure that your family, your job, and your goals are in alignment with God’s call.
